A Great Start!

Woodmen!  We've had a great start to the year!

Karmen was our first student to check out books this year--yay, Karmen!

And we have been FILLED with students this week--sophomores and juniors came down for booktalks and freshmen came for their orientation.

Here's the first group of students to receive booktalks this year!  They were a little camera shy!

Can't wait to continue our year together!

There's a Hero...When You Look Inside Your Heart

Mariah Carey, anyone?

Welcome, freshmen!  You're here to begin research on a hero--so who is coming to mind?  An inventor?  Astronaut?  Soldier?  The options are limitless, right?

Here you will find a list of the resources that will best help you get started with your research.  And trust me--these sources are GREAT!  You definitely want to start here!

First, BOOKS.  We have some great books on people, so check out our catalog to find books in the library. And don't forget--if you search with a person's name and don't find a book, try broadening your search (World War I, Discoveries, etc).

We have two FANTASTIC historical databases--these databases give all kinds of information on people and their achievements.
If the hero that you're researching is/was American, use the American History Online database.
If the hero is/was from another country, use the World History database
For both databasess, use the username "greenwoodchs" and the password "woodmen."

Take my advice--don't go straight to Google.  You'll get a bazillion results that aren't research-worthy.  Instead, try Sweet Search, a search engine designed specifically for students.

Don't forget to grab Mrs. Reynolds, Mrs. Yeater, or any of the library students for additional research help.

Senior Project Research

Welcome, Seniors!  Are you ready to tackle your Senior Project research paper?  Here are some resources to help you get started:

  • Want books?  Use our catalog to help you find books that relate to your topic!  Any of our library workers would be happy to help you locate materials on the shelves.
  • Since you'll be using a lot of persuasion in your paper, you'll want to check out the Opposing Viewpoints database.  The password is "woodmen."  This will take you to persuasive articles on practically any topic!
  • For general research that will bring you all kinds of newspaper and journal articles, use INSPIRE.  No password required here!  I like clicking on the "Student Research Center" button on the bottom of the page to start my research.
  • If you need any historical information to prove/disprove a point, use one of our historical databases--American History Online or World History Online.  The username for both is "greenwoodchs" and the password is "woodmen."
  • Before you go to Google, try one of these search engines--Sweet Search or Google Scholar.  These are more filtered to help you eliminate the junk and get to the good stuff!
Have questions?  See Mrs. Reynolds or Mrs. Yeater in the IMC to help you get on track!  And good luck as you finish out your last semester!

The Rosie Raffle is Up and Running!

Hey, Woodmen!  Two weeks ago we started our Rosie Raffle.  Remember, this raffle is a chance for YOU to win AWESOME prizes just by reading AWESOME books!

The rules?
  • Read a Rosie book.  Any of them.  Yes, even the graphic novel and novel-in-verse.  Or read all of them!
  • Take an AR quiz and get at least a 60%.  This should be super-simple.
  • Come to the circulation desk in the library and fill out a Rosie raffle ticket.  Now you're entered and ready for the raffle!
Every Friday we draw a winner and give our GREAT prizes!

Did you hear that Sophomore Henry has been the winner for the first TWO weeks!  On Week 1 he won a Divergent DVD and on Week 2 he won a Cheesecake Factory gift card!  Who's going to win next?!

Oh, and did you hear that teachers can also participate?!

Here's Henry with his Cheesecake Factory gift card!  Great job, Henry!

The Rosies are going fast, so come by the library soon to check one out!
